Causes of iron deficiency
It is determined by a low level of iron in the blood, iron deficiency is observed in approximately 50% of female athletes, in men it is less common. In the absence of treatment, iron deficiency can develop into iron deficiency anemia, which worsens the aerobic processes of the body, brain and muscle metabolism, impairs performance and endurance, weakens immunity.
Sports anemia is a decrease in the number of red blood cells or the level of hemoglobin in the blood
Endurance training increases the volume of blood, which dilutes hemoglobin and hematocrit in the blood, making it artificially low when the level of iron in reality is within normal limits.
Sports anemia is common when an athlete returns to training after
a certain period of inactivity or when there is a sharp increase in intensity
training sessions. After the body gets used to the training load, hemoglobin and
hematocrit return to normal level.
Studies of sports doctors and hematologists have found that athletes need
increased iron intake for the following reasons:
- the main iron losses increase by 20-30%;
- additionally, there are blood losses due to micro-bleeding from the intestine;
- many people have an increased need for iron due to an increase in muscle mass;
- an increase in the blood flow rate, during physical exertion, leads to increased
"wear" of red blood cells, acceleration of iron turnover in the body.
"Marching hemoglobinuria". This condition is found in soldiers after long marches. Anemia of this type also develops in runners due to strong foot impacts on a hard surface for a long time. As a result of such blows, at each step, a certain number of red blood cells circulating through the blood vessels of the sole of the foot disintegrates.
With increased sweating, people actively exfoliate the skin epithelium, which is the depository of significant amounts of iron in the body.
